EAT MY SHORTS

Attention all comedy filmmakers!

Our annual short film program, Eat My Shorts, is back!

We are searching for the funniest short films from around the world to showcase in Eat My Shorts, during this year’s 39th Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal (July 26-31, 2021). We’re looking at you to make us laugh! Submit your short film from any comedic genre – from mockumentaries to edgy comedies, parodies to animation, and everything in between! All are welcome.

SUBMISSIONS & IMPORTANT DATES:

We’ll be accepting your comedy short film submissions until May 21, 2021 (Extended Deadline) but take advantage of our Regular Deadline which ends on April 30, 2021. The top films will be screened online during our July Montreal Festival. These top films will be voted on by a jury of programming experts, selected by Just For Laughs. The first-place prize is a cash reward of $1,000 CAD. The runner-up filmmaker(s) will receive $500 CAD, and the third-place prize is $250 CAD. The winning filmmaker(s) will be announced at the screening.

CRITERIA:

Films should not exceed 15 minutes in length (including credits). All types of comedic genres will be accepted, and all languages will be accepted but subtitles must be in English. Films that have played other festivals are allowed, but submissions cannot be publicly available online (private links on YouTube or Vimeo are acceptable). Films must have been completed in 2019, 2020 or 2021. Open to filmmakers worldwide.

SHOULD YOUR FILM BE SELECTED:

• Selected shorts are compiled onto a screening compilation in a format determined at the sole discretion of the Festival. You will be notified of the format required.
• You will need to fill out, sign and return a screening agreement (supplied by festival)
• We will request additional marketing materials (if applicable), such as photo(s)/stills of your film for website, press kits, etc.
• Each project will receive up to 2 digital passes to attend the festival.

Just For Laughs and Project 10 Productions invite you – the comics, writers, creators and producers on the cutting edge of comedy – to submit your long-form series ideas for a chance to present to a panel of industry experts at Just for Laughs ComedyPRO.

Projects should be based on, or inspired by stories, sketches or characters developed by writers, producers, showrunners, stand-up comics, improv groups, sketch comedy teams and comedy writers. We’re looking for fresh ideas that make us laugh.

We offer two (2) pitch formats: From Set to Screen: TV, OTT, SVOD and More, presented by Project 10 Productions, which showcases long-form single or multi-camera series (half-hour or longer),and Beyond the Box: Playing It Short, our short-form format aimed at digital platforms (no greater than 15 minutes).

A maximum of five (5) projects per format will be selected and presented to a panel of leading comedy industry executives and decision-makers in a real-time, live-streaming pitching session. Selected applicants will be given five (5) minutes to present their work, receive invaluable feedback, and gain unparalleled access to top comedy industry professionals.

From Set to Screen: TV, OTT, SVOD and More presented by Project 10 Productions

Submissions are single or multi-camera scripted sitcoms, game shows, reality shows, variety, sketch or animation series intended for a half-hour or longer running time per episode. Past panelists have included executives from Amazon, Bell Media, CBS, Comedy Central, CBC Comedy, FOX, FX Networks, HBO, Hulu, IFC, NBC and ABC.

OVERVIEW:

We are in search for the funniest, new, innovative long-form episodic, or serialized comedy content. Some of the world’s most beloved shows have stemmed from comedy writers and performers with a strong story and point of view, from classic television series such as Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld to current hits such as Netflix's The Kominsky Method, HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, FX's What We Do In The Shadows, Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, Hulu’s The Great, ABC's Black-ish, Amazon Studio's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, NBC's The Good Place, CBC/PopTV’s Schitt’s Creek, Comedy Central's Awkwafina is Nora from Queens and Apple TV’s Ted Lasso

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

Submission packets can be uploaded by first clicking on the PAY AND SUBMIT button at the bottom of this page and must adhere to the specific guidelines for each format. After you have paid your $50.00 USD submission fee, you will receive an e-mail with detailed submission instructions.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2021 BY 11:59PM PST

SUBMISSION MATERIALS:

• Series bible that provides an overview of your show concept as well as an outline of the pilot episode, series progression and professional bios of the creative and production team.
• Complete pilot script OR pilot episode. NOTE: Where completed pilot video is included in the pitch, it cannot have been produced prior to 2020.
• Episode budget top-sheet: If you have shot your pilot, this should be the true production budget. If you have not shot the pilot but are submitting the pilot script, this should be your estimated pilot budget.
• ADDITIONAL video illustrating and/or supporting your series treatment. Examples of additional video submissions can include, but are not limited to: excerpt of stand-up act, taped sketch that highlights character(s), produced scenes. Additional video should not exceed fifteen (15) minutes in length.
• Non-refundable fee of $50.00 USD

• The Just For Laughs Stand Up & Pitch program is open to applicants worldwide.
• All submissions must be in English.
• Submitted materials will not be returned.
• Deadline for ALL materials is
Friday, May 14, 2021 by 11:59pm PST.
• All uploaded and submitted documents and materials must be clearly labeled with the project title, applicants name, contact telephone and email.
• All applicants will be contacted via email so please ensure that you provide a working email address.
• You may submit more than one project to each format section. You may also submit the same project idea to each format section but you must provide the corresponding submission materials.
• You may submit as a team. Performers that work and/or produce in partnership with writers/directors/producers are welcome to submit a collaborative piece.
• All submissions are reviewed by the Just For Laughs Stand Up & Pitch program committee, and final selections are at the complete discretion of this committee.
• A non-refundable fee of $50.00 USD must be included with each submission (credit card payment only). If your project is not selected the fee may be applied to a Just For Laughs pass.
• Members of the selected teams will receive passes to Just For Laughs ComedyPRO (up to two members).

PRIZES:

An invitation to attend the 2022 Just for Laughs Festival will be extended to the creator of the winning project of theFrom Set To Screen: TV, OTT, SVOD and More pitch session: JFL will provide one (1) free trip to the Just For Laughs Festival, including one (1) flight, a hotel room for up to three (3) nights, and an Industry pass.

All finalists and the winner retain the rights to their projects throughout the process.

Beyond The Box: Playing It Short

Just for Laughs invites you – the comics, writers, creators and producers on the cutting edge of comedy – to submit your short-form series ideas for a chance to present to a panel of industry experts at Just for Laughs ComedyPRO.

Projects should be based on, or inspired by stories, sketches or characters developed by writers, producers, showrunners, stand-up comics, improv groups, sketch comedy teams and comedy writers. We’re looking for fresh ideas that make us laugh.

Beyond the Box: Playing it Short

Submissions are digital-first shows with episode lengths no greater than 15 minutes. These pitches include scripted, animation, factual, variety and sketch, all shorter form series ideas aimed at platforms such as Snap, Apple TV, Sundance TV, and YouTube. Past panelists have included executives from Above Average, Adult Swim, Bell Media, CBC Comedy, CollegeHumor/Big Breakfast, Funny or Die, New Form Digital, Revry, Snap and YouTube.

OVERVIEW:

We're searching for the funniest, new, innovative short form comedy content.

Whether you’re an established YouTube Channel Partner or just starting to build your subscriber base, this is your chance to pitch your new content ideas to the decision makers who can bring you the audience you seek.

We’re looking for series ideas that lend themselves to bite-sized viewing, whether serialized stories like State of the Union or thematically-linked pieces such as Good Mythical MorningKids React or Honest Trailers.

Online stars such as Tana Mongeau, Jack Douglass, Brandon Rogers, Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, King Bach, and Miranda Sings, and series such as The FeelsThe Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Epic Rap Battles of History, You Suck at Cooking, and Final Space all have their roots in comedy.
